Perhaps because the picture is so old, perhaps because Olivier as an actor had an ethereal quality on the screen, yet at the same time very virile...an unusual combination (I have that myself, so I well recognise it, lol).
It's a shame that the studio execs of the day (1944) didn't think the audiences would be willing to sit through a film true to Shakespeare's text; Branagh has had tremendous success w making film versions of the plays containing every single word Will himself included...Branagh's 4.5 hour 'Hamlet' is a marvel.Juan Gabriel Llorcahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04979128934328741295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16743003.post-36483238191880133312007-10-25T21:44:00.000-07:002007-10-25T21:44:00.000-07:00I love the K Branagh, 'Henry V', but I have equal ...I love the K Branagh, 'Henry V', but I have equal regard for the 'Henry V' directed by Laurence Olivier, in which he also starred.
Olivier did three around the same time, Henry and 'Hamlet' and 'Richard III'.
I find the Olivier's Henry V very stirring and fresh, even tho it was made in 1944. The production was done partly to stir the spirit of the English people, who were of course at war with Germany; maybe this real-world consideration pulled greater performances from all concerned.
I strongly recommend viewing, if you love Agincourt.
It's a truly great cinematic experience!Juan Gabriel Llorcahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04979128934328741295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16743003.post-52363135497697056382007-10-25T15:33:00.000-07:002007-10-25T15:33:00.000-07:00Alex: Then I'm glad I provided the link to your m...Alex: Then I'm glad I provided the link to your most chilling moment :)

The most chilling moment for me is when Henry says, "Here was a royal fellowship of death." Not historical, perhaps, but awesome stuff nonetheless and it drives home the human cost of the victory.Alex Bledsoehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05805521718331603133noreply@blogger.com
