Empty Bowls To Feed The Hungry

I'm posting to my blog earlier than usual today because I've got plans.

The North Texas Food Bank is "a non-profit hunger relief organization that distributes donated, purchased and prepared foods through a network of feeding programs in thirteen North Texas counties." NTFB is a member of America's Second Harvest program

Every year NTFB holds fund-raising luncheons in both Dallas and Fort Worth. Area artists and pottery makers donate hundreds of hand-thrown bowls. Local restaurants donate prepared food. Willing donors pay $35 for an empty bowl and the food that will fill it.

Today will be the tenth annual Empty Bowls luncheon, which will be held in the Meyerson Symphony Center in downtown Dallas. While I've made donations for years, I have never attended the actual lunch. I've invited my good friend Linda to go with me, and so we're having an OUTING.

Two posts will follow this one today.

See you tomorrow.

What a great cause. I wish they had something like that around here. Have fun and good for you and everyone else involved in helping those in need :-)

SVD: Thanks. I've just gotten home. The turnout was FABULOUS. I had to park on the seventh level below ground in the Symphony building (I've had tickets to the Symphony for 20 years and didn't even realize the parking went that far underground).

Probably 20 restaurants had stands providing soups and all kinds of bread and then cookies or gelato. I had Maine lobster chowder and then ham and navy bean soup, cornbread and a lemon cookie.

Musicians played throughout lunch and potters did demonstrations of making pottery. The bowl I selected is vaguely Chinese looking: white with green willow branches. It's beautiful.

There was a silent auction to bid on the really spectacular bowls that had been donated.

Last year the luncheon collected about $250,000. I'm guessing we will surpass that this year.

This is a wonderful idea for a fund raiser. Your lunch sounds delicious. Glad to hear you had a good time.
